Ways of Seeing
Academic Project
2024

This project was developed in response to a brief from Cinema IDEAL, which invited the creation of a visual identity for a screening cycle of John Berger's documentary series Ways of Seeing, originally broadcast by the BBC in 1972.

The brief described an experimental and processual approach as essential: drawing on different visual languages, articulating the historical context of the series with contemporary visual references, and demonstrating a conscious use of image, typography and legibility as tools of communication.

The central design decision was to build the identity from manual collage. Working with analogue materials - photocopies, cut and layered fragments. This process-led image became the foundation of a poster series in four colour versions: white, terracotta, lavender and green.

The identity carries through to a cinema ticket, a programme sheet and a tote bag, demonstrating how a single handmade image can anchor a complete and coherent visual system.
